Ben selkow

BEN SELKOW is an Emmy®-nominated producer, director, EP, and showrunner passionate about innovative storytelling, unearthing new worlds, social justice, and amplifying powerful voices from the margins. 

Selkow co-founded Good Trouble Studios with James Adolphus, a boutique film and television production company. Their first project is BEING MARY TYLER MOORE in collaboration with Hillman Grad, producer Debra Martin Chase and financier Fifth Season, premiering at SXSW and later on HBO. Currently, Ben is partnered with Adolphus, Lena Waithe and Rishi Rajani to produce GIFTED & BLACK for Amazon Studios, a forthcoming project on the power of Black music through the lens of the Verzuz music battles created by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland during Covid and in response to the uprisings of 2020. 

Ben was co-executive producer for Adam McKay’s Hyperobject-produced series THE INVISIBLE PILOT (HBO) and the Emmy®-nominated 6-part docu-series on QAnon, Q: INTO THE STORM (HBO). Previously, Ben was an executive producer/director for the Emmy®-nominated investigative docu-series TRAFFICKED WITH MARIANA VAN ZELLER (National Geographic Channel) with Muck Media. He was the showrunner, an executive producer and a director on Netflix’s 8-part documentary series on luminary hip hop artists entitled RAPTURE (2018 SXSW Film Festival) partnering with Mass Appeal. Ben directed and produced several episodes of the Emmy® Award-winning series ANTHONY BOURDAIN: PARTS UNKNOWN (CNN), was the series director for BELIEVER WITH REZA ASLAN (CNN), and was a senior producer on the Bourdain travel series THE GETAWAY, directing episodes with Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey, Oscar-winners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and Zachary Levi. He co-created and executive produced the 10-part Participant Media docu-series WELCOME TO FAIRFAX produced the environmental thriller documentary DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS (Participant/Topic), which premiered at Hot Docs, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Audience Award at DOC NYC; directed/produced the feature documentary BURIED ABOVE GROUND (PBS/America ReFramed); produced PRAYER FOR A PERFECT SEASON (HBO Sports) with director Marc Levin; THE CARRIER (PBS/Tribeca Film Festival) with director Maggie Betts; and directed/produced A SUMMER IN THE CAGE (Sundance Channel), his first film. 

Ben is an Honors graduate of Wesleyan University’s Film Studies and African-American Studies programs and a Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellow.

JAMES ADOLPHUS, a three-time Peabody Award-winning cinematographer and an Emmy® Award-winning director and producer, crafts globally resonant narratives that navigate the profound intersections of social, cultural, and political landscapes.

Adolphus' keen vision found a canvas in the HBO Original, BEING MARY TYLER MOORE, a feature documentary that unveiled the spring season on HBO/MAX. Garnering a Prime Time Emmy Nomination for Best Documentary, this cinematic exploration, co-produced by Lena Waithe's Hillman Grad and Adolphus' own brainchild, Good Trouble Studios (co-founded with Ben Selkow), delves into the pioneering trajectory of Mary Tyler Moore. This iconic figure's career is a testament to her transformative impact on the entertainment realm and societal perceptions of women's roles.

With an unwavering commitment to authenticity, Adolphus is at the helm of GIFTED & BLACK for Amazon Studios. This ambitious project paints a vivid tapestry of Black creativity in music, tracing its rich lineage from historical plantations to the esteemed Pulitzer Prize.

Boasting nine Emmy nominations and winner of three, James directed SOUL OF A NATION for ABC News, an unprecedented Black news magazine television series. This poignant series offers a candid lens into the lived experiences of Black Americans, especially in the wake of the profound societal upheavals following George Floyd's tragic passing.

His distinguished directorial endeavors include Netflix's DATING AROUND, Quibi's YOU AINT GOT THESE, and the thought-provoking LITTLE WHITE LIE for Independent Lens. Adolphus' cinematic expertise also graces projects like Disney Plus's ENCORE!, HBO's REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL, Netflix's RAPTURE, and CNN’S BELIEVER WITH REZA ASLAN, showcasing his versatility and profound understanding of the human experience.

Dividing his time between the cultural hubs of New York and Los Angeles, James Adolphus strives to be a beacon of storytelling brilliance, guiding audiences to deeper insights and understanding with every frame.
